In 1997, 51 years after the bikini's debut, and 77 years after the Miss America Pageant changed into founded, the 51 contestants in the contest have been, for the primary time, allowed to select their very own swimsuits. On September 9, 1997, Miss Maryland Jamie Fox have become the primary contestant in 50 years to compete in a two-piece suit at some point of the Preliminary Swimsuit Competition at the Miss America Pageant.
