Emerald is a gemstone and a ramification of the mineral beryl (Be3Al2(SiO3)6) colored green by means of hint amounts of chromium and/or on occasion vanadium. Beryl has a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale. Most emeralds are especially protected, so their longevity (resistance to breakage) is assessed as usually bad. Emerald is a cyclosilicate.
