Structure of Amethyst
Amethyst is a purple form of quartz (SiO2) and owes its violet shade to irradiation, impurities of iron and in a few instances other transition metals, and the presence of different trace elements, which bring about complex crystal lattice substitutions. The hardness of the mineral is similar to quartz, consequently making it suitable for use in rings.
