Waistcoats (called vests in American English) had been almost constantly worn with suits previous to the Forties. Due to rationing in the course of World War II, their occurrence declined, but their popularity has long past inside and outside of fashion from the 1970s onwards. A pocket watch on a sequence, one cease of which is inserted thru a middle buttonhole, is regularly worn with a waistcoat; in any other case, on the grounds that World War I once they came to prominence of army necessity, men have worn wristwatches, which can be worn with any healthy besides the total nighttime dress (white tie). Although many examples of waistcoats worn with a double-breasted jacket can be found from the 1920s to the 1940s, that would be unusual these days (one factor of a double-breasted jacket being, it may be supposed, to remove the waistcoat). Traditionally, the bottom button of a waistcoat is left undone; just like the vents in the rear of a jacket, this enables the body bend when sitting. Some waistcoats could have lapels, others do no longer.
