In 1997, 51 years after the bikini's debut, and 77 years after the Miss America Pageant changed into based, the 51 contestants within the contest have been, for the first time, allowed to select their very own swimsuits. On September 9, 1997, Miss Maryland Jamie Fox have become the first contestant in 50 years to compete in a -piece swimsuit at some point of the Preliminary Swimsuit Competition at the Miss America Pageant.
