Houston, Texas based MGA promoter Jerry Bird bought the bankrupt Miss Gay USA festival from former MGA Jimi Dee in 1985. Within a few years he took the festival from a small 12 contestant affair to a national showcase with over 80 individuals. In 1986, the primary Miss Gay USA Naomi Sims topped Michael Andrews. In the mid-1990s the competition turned into renamed Miss Gay USofA after court cases and legal threats from the owner of Miss USA, Donald Trump, who placed a cease and desist order until verbiage can be agreed upon that allowed for each competitions to keep with out confusion or discrimination.
